- Place the peeled and cubed sweet potatoes in a large pot.
- Cover with cold water.
- Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
- Drain the sweet potatoes thoroughly in a colander.
- Return the drained sweet potatoes to the pot.
- Add the butter, milk or cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, salt, pepper, and maple syrup (if using).
- Using a potato masher or an electric mixer, mash the sweet potatoes until smooth and creamy.

Notes
For extra flavor, roast the sweet potatoes instead of boiling. Experiment with different spices like cardamom or chili powder. Use warm milk or cream for a creamier texture. Avoid overmixing the potatoes to prevent a gummy texture. Mashed sweet potatoes can be made ahead of time and reheated. They can also be frozen for later use.
