  • 1/2 cup caramelized onions
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced optional
  • 1/4 cup mustard
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup relish
  • 4 slices cheese Provolone, Swiss, cheddar, or Havarti
  • Hot sauce to taste optional

Equipment

  • Grill
  • tongs
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • Grill brush
  • small bowl
  • Basting brush (optional)
  • Grill basket (optional)
  • Panini press (optional)

Method

  1. Score the kielbasa: Use a sharp knife to make shallow diagonal cuts along the length of the kielbasa on both sides.
  2. Lightly Oil: Brush the kielbasa with olive oil or vegetable oil.
  3. Season (Optional): Sprinkle the kielbasa with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and black pepper.
  4. Preheat the grill to medium heat (around 350-400°F or 175-200°C).
  5. Grill the Kielbasa: Place the kielbasa on the grill grates and cook for about 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until it’s heated through and has grill marks.
  6. Warm the Buns (Optional): Lightly toast the buns on the grill for a minute or two.
  7. Spread the Sauce: Spread your favorite sauce or condiment on the buns (mustard, ketchup, relish, or spicy mayo).
  8. Load Up the Toppings: Pile on your favorite toppings (sauerkraut, caramelized onions, bell peppers, jalapeños).
  9. Add the Kielbasa: Place the grilled kielbasa on top of the toppings.
  10. Cheese, Please! (Optional): Add a slice or two of your favorite cheese on top of the kielbasa.
  11. Top it Off: Finish with the top bun and serve immediately.

Notes

Don't overcook the kielbasa. Use a grill basket for smaller toppings. Experiment with different types of buns. Serve with coleslaw or potato salad for a complete meal. Prep ingredients ahead of time. Keep a spray bottle of water handy for flare-ups. Consider using a panini press to melt the cheese and crisp the sandwich.
